Conservation-Based Projects

17-08-2015

Torc Ecology participates in a number of local and international conservation projects each year. Local projects have involved an on-going barn owl recovery programme, working with the local farming community, advising home owners and local businesses on building/site enhancement measures for bats, and giving presentations to local charities. International projects have involved promoting bat conservation and participating in beaver reintroduction programmes in Europe. Case study: Abbey farm, West NorfolkField margin A habitat enhancement plan was compiled for Abbey Farm with the aim to increase commuting, foraging and roosting opportunities for bats. A Phase 1 Habitat survey of the farm highlighted areas that would benefit from additional native planting and habitat manipulation, and preliminary recommendations were made for bat box locations across the farm. Follow up bat nocturnal surveys have been recommended within the 2009 active bat season. This assessment contributed to Abbey Farm's application for funding under the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme with the aim of improving wildlife opportunities across the farm.
