Craft Beer Brewed from Sewage Treatment

26-05-2015

Would you drink sewage beer? Craft beer brewed from sewage processed in a sewage treatment plant is the next big thing – but would you drink it? Up to 10 trial barrels of the stomach-turning ‘sewage beer‘ will be made in Oregon, where regulators were persuaded it wouldn’t make people sick The yellow tinted frothy beverage has been approved by regulators in Oregon after they were persuaded it wouldn’t make people sick. A local sewage treatment firm plans to treat the effluent before handing it over to microbrewers, who will create the unusual ‘sewage beer‘. Only five to 10 barrels of the beer will be made at first and it won’t be sold in shops – but its production could expand if it proves popular. An assistant director at the firm, told regulators it was designed to “raise awareness of the reusable nature of all water”. He added in a 50-page report: “The craft beer will be made available at tasting events.” “By highlighting craft beer, a product Oregon is known for around the world, the project will seek to engage… people everywhere in a conversation about water.” The Oregon Brewers Guild and Oregon Brew Crew are both behind the plan, which the state’s Environmental Quality Commission approved last week. A committee was told the water would be treated to ‘very high standards’ and pose a ‘very low human health risk’. The report added: “Although this water is typically of lower quality, used water has resource value and can often be safely reused without adverse affects to public health.” Sickening There’s a history to the claim, as beer actually helped stem an 1854 outbreak of cholera in central London. Soho doctor John Snow found brewery workers escaped disease because they could drink limitless beer, whose fermentation process killed the bacteria. But not everyone is happy. Resident Dorothy Shoemaker complained: “This looks like a bad idea. Fresh water is probably healthier. The peroxide added to the potable reuse water will make people sick. “The water meets drinking water requirements, but does it smell and taste good?” Elizabeth Graser-Lindset added: “There is plenty of clean water in Oregon. “Let’s let the ground do the purifying as water sinks a hundred or more feet to the water table. “DON’T use recycled water in alcoholic beverages.” Source: Craft beer brewed from sewage is the next big thing – but would you drink it? – Mirror Online About CountyClean CountyClean Environmental Services Ltd was established in 2007 with our vision of accomplishing the highest quality of liquid waste management services and to provide the very best value for our clients.
