A hidden drainage system that keeps us safe

13-05-2024

With more frequent and prolonged rainfall, coupled with rising summer temperatures, extreme weather conditions are becoming the norm in the UK, leading to severe disruption and misery caused by flooding.

This, alongside rising sea levels, a growing population, and increased urban development, has highlighted the crucial role of our drainage systems.

Often overlooked, these systems are vital in reducing the risk of flooding and mitigating the distress caused when floodwaters invade our lives.

Precast concrete drainage may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of flood prevention, but with the increase in extreme weather events, our UK surface water and foul water sewers are overburdened and under-maintained.

We rely on precast concrete gullies and gully covers to collect water from roadways, reducing surface water and ensuring safe travel. This water is then directed through the drainage system to manholes—comprised of a seating ring, cover slab, and chamber ring—before entering the pipeline, where it is stored until it can be released further into the system.

Gullies and Gully Covers

Designed to assist in the removal of rainwater, floodwater, and debris from roadways, gullies play a crucial role in keeping roads clear and safe for drivers.

Throughout the UK road network, the gully cover sits beneath the gully grating atop the gully itself, discharging surface water from roads and highways where large volumes can accumulate, directing it into the drainage system.

Precast concrete gullies and gully cover slabs are built to withstand traffic, making them a vital component of stormwater management systems.

Seating Rings

An excellent alternative to engineering bricks, concrete seating rings—also known as adjusting units—provide an access point into surface water drainage systems. Positioned atop the cover slab, they help adjust the manhole to the desired depth.

Cover Slabs

Heavy-duty cover slabs, available in various access sizes depending on the application, sit atop chamber rings, acting as a lid or 'biscuit'. Made from high-quality precast concrete, they are designed to withstand heavy loads, making them a popular choice for roads, railways, housing developments, and infrastructure projects.

Precast concrete cover slabs are quickly installed, enhancing manhole security by preventing unauthorised access to the underground network. Their long lifespan ensures reliable performance over time. Overall, concrete manhole cover slabs combine strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness, making them a reliable choice for manhole construction.

Chamber Rings

Precast concrete manhole chamber rings are essential for providing ladder, step, or rung access to below-ground foul and surface water management drainage systems. Circular in shape, these rings are delivered ready for installation.

Designed to resist infiltration, groundwater attack, and corrosive environments, chamber rings boast a design life of 120 years, making them the true superheroes of the sewer system.

Forming part of a manhole or inspection chamber, they are stacked to create the structure, playing a critical role in connecting pipes, changing directions, and accommodating junctions within the sewer or drainage network.

Pipes

The inherent strength of concrete pipes ensures they retain their shape, allowing for even load distribution and easy installation. These pipes are crucial in holding surface water before it is conveyed into the drainage network and are resistant to rodent attacks.

Secure Drainage Systems

While we cannot control the rain, effective stormwater management and drainage solutions are key to reducing floodwater and the impact of flooding. As we continue to build more infrastructure and homes, reducing green spaces that naturally retain water, our drainage systems are becoming overloaded due to the lack of compensation for the extra water runoff.

By adding to or improving your concrete drainage system, you can help protect against future water damage.
